The years spent as a slave, are spent serving spiritually dark taskmasters or other slaves to the darkness themselves serving the darkness. The darkness is not a physical characteristic, but one of spirit. All the while we hurt the ones we care about defending a past we cannot hope to defend on our own. All the while the light is all around us and completely available to us.
